Science at Bancroft
Making the world around us more intelligible, giving students the skills and knowledge they need to better understand the challenges we’re facing this year and those that await us in the future, planning and building objects for specific purposes, stimulating students’ creativity, meeting scientists at Bancroft and elsewhere in Montreal, opening up to the world – that’s what elementary school science is all about. The fields are divided into three universes: the living universe; the material universe; and the earth and space universe.
Hands-On Learning
Since last year, our Cycle 3 students have been taking part in a project in partnership with the association Les amis de la montagne. During this visit, students and teachers were accompanied by members of the educational team from Les amis de la montagne on Mount Royal, who introduced them to the biodiversity of Mount Royal, the fauna and more particularly the flora (which trees can be found on the mountain, their life cycle, etc.). The students were then invited to collect tree seeds on site, which will then be taken care of by the Mount Royal team in a nursery until February. They will carry out the manipulations required to ensure successful germination of the seeds. The trees will ultimately be planted in schools and neighbourhoods in need. As part of this same project, we want to get involved by taking part in the Corvée du Mont-Royal, thus confirming in a concrete way our action to preserve the environment in our community.
Practical Technology & Robotics
At Bancroft, we love wildlife, but we don’t neglect technology either: we build our own robots, and every year we take part in the RoboJunior robotics competition organized by L’Alliance pour l’Enseignement de la Science et de la Technologie. Many of Quebec’s English-speaking primary and secondary schools are represented, so it’s a ton of fun and learning!
